My first date shake was years ago in Indio during a hot and dusty wind storm. The cold creamy shake was just what I needed as I waited out the storm. That shake was delicious and filled with tasty bits of fresh dates. I was hooked.
I have been all over the desert southwest sampling many of these delightful creations, but the best date shake I ever tasted is made right here in Borrego Springs by Big Horn Fudge Company, known locally as The Fudge Factory. Outside their door is a small sign that says “Come in, we are awesome.” And it’s true.
At least twice a week, and sometimes three times during the summer months, I head down to Palm Canyon Drive, visit the counter inside their shop and sit outside on a bench or table to sip a beautiful date shake.
Besides date shakes, The Fudge Factory has a wide selection of fudge as well as ice cream, smoothies, pastries, roasted nuts, coffee drinks, candies, and apple pies from Julian. The Fudge Factory owners and staff are cheerful, friendly, and helpful. Highly recommend.
